AstriCon, ORLANDO, Fla., October 9, 2018 – Sangoma Technologies Corporation (TSX VENTURE: STC), a trusted leader in value-based Unified Communications (UC) and UC as a Service (UCaaS) solutions and the world’s largest provider of open source communications solutions, today at the annual AstriCon users and developers conference, announced Asterisk 16 and FreePBX 15, the next major releases of the world’s two most popular open source communications projects.

“On behalf of all the employees of Sangoma and Digium, I would like to welcome the global community of open source communication developers to AstriCon,” said Bill Wignall, President and CEO of Sangoma. “It is clearly the premier event in the world today for this part of our industry, with attendance approaching 1,000 people, dozens of speaking sessions from amongst hundreds of submitted abstracts, and a full exhibitor floor. I’m very excited about this year’s event, and as we work hard at bringing our two companies together, I’d like to take this opportunity to assure the community of our commitment to these critical open source projects that mean so much to the communications world. I hope that today’s major releases of both Asterisk 16 and FreePBX 15 demonstrate that we are already actively delivering even more innovation that will further enhance the missions of the two projects and their value to the communities.”

In addition to today’s software releases, Sangoma is also taking strides to more seamlessly integrate its products with both open source projects. For example, FreePBX EndPoint Manager and PhoneApps are now free for Digium D-Series IP phones, a move that will provide cost savings for many FreePBX users and give them better access to more product options.

Asterisk 16, the newest Long Term Support (LTS) release of Asterisk, adds new capabilities that enable developers to build more robust, feature-rich solutions with improved performance and better adaptability to end-user environments. Asterisk 16 improves video conferencing performance, boosts SIP call-handling performance in high volume situations, and introduces new text-based messaging capabilities for the creation of richer client applications. The new video functionality builds upon the extensive video conferencing capabilities introduced in Asterisk 15 to provide dramatically improved video performance for all network conditions, reducing the risk of frozen video frames and providing a world-class framework for creating cutting-edge video solutions. Asterisk 16 also includes support for Enhanced Messaging, giving developers the tools to build rich client applications with text-based data exchanges. Now, multi-party video conferencing client applications can share URLs, list conference participants, highlight talkers, and enable multi-party chat. Asterisk 16 has also undergone significant performance enhancements to better handle SIP calling by decreasing the system memory and CPU consumption required during high volume situations, most notably when utilizing the PJSIP channel driver.

FreePBX 15, the newest major release of FreePBX, delivers more flexible software that is now even easier to use and maintain. It features a new built-in API to enable easier integration and a redesigned backup and restore process for more flexible system maintenance. The new API is powered by GraphQL, making it easier to integrate FreePBX with third-party applications and enabling users to create more efficient business workflows and processes. At release date, there are 10 modules in production taking advantage of the new API with others currently in development. The new backup process makes system management simpler with a redesigned capability that handles backups on a per-module basis. Now, administrators can create custom backups, perform cross-version backup and restore, and enjoy more options for keeping their data safe.

Asterisk 16 can be downloaded now from the Asterisk web site and FreePBX 15 can be downloaded now from the FreePBX website. For more information, documentation and usage samples, as well as a complete list of new features, changes, and upgrade notes, visit the Asterisk wiki or the FreePBX wiki.
